"Brad puts ass in Edwin Jeans. Do you like?"
It's really, really, hot and really, really humid. Our beloved president, Ellen, wants Ye Olde Marlborians (school staff) and Neuvo Riche Marlborians (music fest staff) to "mingle" so we had lunch down at her house today. It rained until 10 minutes before people were suppost to get there. Richie was like "Umm, it's raining. Shit." but Ellen, ever the optimist, and I suppose she must be as she has assumed command of Marlboro after Prez Paul, was like "no, I really want it to be here." Result: Ellen can, in fact, reverse the weather if she deems it necessary. The "mingle" had mixed results. In general it seemed to work as planned and it tickeled me to see certain festie workers, who were friendly at first and now look through me, sitting only with adult festie staff. The musicians and staff are actually warming to the kitchen staff. Even though we crash and bang around and the kitchen while they, the greatest musicians in the world, reherse Mozart in the dining hall, they still ask very politely if maybe, please, when we get a moment, might we be able to close the dish windows? Meanwhile, a lot of the festie worker kids really obviously hate their jobs and their lives right now which I can't help but take minor joy in. Like I said, a lot of them were friendly at first but now not so much at all. Well, I still like my job, so there, suckers. Remember how one of the festie kids was in Amanda's sorority? I saw Amanda this weekend and she rememebered this girl. "We're both from Tampa. That's all we have in common." So, no skin off my back. Speaking of work, Caroline made me a cake for my birthday! Hooray! I made the whole kitchen come to a brief halt to all have a piece.
Since I knew I'd be working today I did most of my birthday celebrating this weekend. Ashley and I headed to the camp Friday night and brought stuff for a cook out. Luke, Amanda (Colgan) and Nathan (Hedburg) arrived later that evening and we experimented with the bizarre assortment of alcohol that each party had brought. Needless to say, Ashley's and my contribution of a handle of plastic bottle vodka was not a huge hit. Luke only drinks sugarry girly drinks so there was coconut rum and lemonade (what a girl) and plenty of (locally brewed!) beer. The next day the intreped crew set off for a day hike to Mount Stinson about an hour from Lake Winipasauke and clocking in at about 2800 feet. When we got home more games and fun ensued, this time with my mom and Heather (and Elaine) present. Sunday morning I really, really wanted to make bacon (I didn't even like eating it when I ate meat but I like the idea of poking raw meat around with a fork) and Ashley made pancakes. My family doesn't often eat pancakes and Ashley is apparently a pancake making master. We all commented on how ROUND and FLUFFY they were in awed voices which made her blush. Good time had by all! My mom got me Joe Mazur's book "Euclid in the Rainforest" (which I can't wait to read) and some left over like occupational therapy art supplies from one of the psychiatrists she works for. Sue in the kitchen loves beads and made me a braclet/necklace/anklet with a celtic-y knot beat and Ashley gave me her copy of "the perks of being a wall flower".
I really liked being 19; I used it to excuse a lot of my behaviour. But being 20 should be pretty cool too. I'm moving to Cork next month and I've almost got all the paper work together. My flight is booked, and my housing forms should be in the mail. City life again, here I come! Brattleboro is ok, but I can't wait to get out into the rest of the world again. I'm pretty convinced again that I want to join the Air Force. I know I declared this last summer, too, but the more I think on it the more it seems right. I requested more information about Officer Candidate School which hopefully will be arriving today. Dude, guys, I'm 20. And a junior in college. This is wild!
A few closing notes:
Kara and Alli-- Where are you guys? Kara, are you still in Acton? Alli, are you still in Amherst? Because I would like to see both you guys (no snipers please) tonight and that requires some kind of coordination that is hard for me because I don't have a phone. I will see what I can do. Otherwise, I may head to Acton tonight to at least see Kara.
Hanako-- Dude! This phone thing is wicked annoying! Ok, how does this sound: Have you seen Charlie and the Chocolate factory yet? Because I definitely want to see that and it's playing in the Latchis. Are you free Thursday night? If so, let's go see it!
Vermont-- If you don't stop being so freaking hot and humid I'm going to up and move to Ireland. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, Vermont!
